Pharmacology
- Mechanism of action: Same proton pump blockade; orally disintegrating form available.
- Onset / peak / duration: Onset 1 to 2 hours; sustained.
- Half-life / therapeutic level: Half-life about 1.5 hours with long effect.
Clinical use
- Indications: GERD, ulcers, H. pylori, erosive esophagitis.
- Usual dose, route, frequency: 15 to 30 mg PO daily before breakfast.
- Maximum dose / adjustments: Reduce in severe hepatic impairment.
Safety
- Contraindications: Hypersensitivity.
- Black box warning: None.
- Interactions: Same PPI interactions.
- Pregnancy / lactation: Use if needed.
- High-alert: No.
Adverse effects
- Common side effects: Headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
- Serious effects to report: C. difficile, hypomagnesemia, interstitial nephritis.

Nursing process
- Assessment before administration: Symptoms, magnesium with long use.
- Interventions during therapy: Give before breakfast; ODT dissolves on the tongue.
