- Pharmacologic class: Stool softener (surfactant).
Pharmacology
- Mechanism of action: Draws water into stool to soften it.
- Onset / peak / duration: Onset 12 to 72 hours.
- Half-life / therapeutic level: Minimal absorption; no level.
Clinical use
- Indications: Prevention of constipation and straining.
- Usual dose, route, frequency: 50 to 300 mg PO daily.
- Maximum dose / adjustments: Per product.
Safety
- Contraindications: Intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal pain.
- Black box warning: None.
- Interactions: May increase absorption of mineral oil.
- Pregnancy / lactation: Commonly used.
- High-alert: No.
Adverse effects
- Common side effects: Mild cramping, throat irritation with liquid.
- Serious effects to report: No bowel movement with abdominal pain.
- Antidote / reversal: Not applicable.
Nursing process
- Assessment before administration: Bowel pattern, hydration.
- Interventions during therapy: Encourage fluids; it softens but does not stimulate.
- Monitor: Bowel movements.
- Evaluation / expected outcome: Softer, easier stools.
