Pharmacology

• Mechanism of action: Draws water into stool to soften it.
• Onset / peak / duration: Onset 12 to 72 hours.
• Half-life / therapeutic level: Minimal absorption; no level.

Clinical use

• Indications: Prevention of constipation and straining.
• Usual dose, route, frequency: 50 to 300 mg PO daily.
• Maximum dose / adjustments: Per product.

Safety

• Contraindications: Intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal pain.
• Black box warning: None.
• Interactions: May increase absorption of mineral oil.
• Pregnancy / lactation: Commonly used.
• High-alert: No.

Adverse effects

• Common side effects: Mild cramping, throat irritation with liquid.
• Serious effects to report: No bowel movement with abdominal pain.
